              Oakdale Auction:  Saturday, April 14, 2012

              Please return your RSVP card to buy your ticket(s) and help the auction team plan for the meal.  Feel free to mail the small envelope or drop it off at Donna's desk in the front of the school to save on postage.

              For those new families to Oakdale, this is Oakdale's 22nd annual fund raising auction.  It is an adult only evening filled with good food, great deals of gift cards, summer camps, and many other items.  Most items fall under the silent auction format where you are assigned a family number to bid with until you have claimed the item with the highest bid.  The "live auction" is when the class projects will be auctioned off to the highest bidder.  Remember, the 6th grade project is the memory quilt that each student was able to add a signature and personal quote. Feel free to ask more questions if I have left anything off.

              Oakdale only has 2 fund raisers all year.  We focus on the Rocket Run in the fall and the Auction in the spring.  (No wrapping paper or cookie dough!) The Oakdale School Foundation does a remarkable job providing all the "extras" that make Oakdale remarkable!

              6th Grade Information
              It is a pleasure to welcome the new 6th graders to middle school.  There are 62
              eager students ready and willing to accept the challenge.  Hopefully all of the things they do will make this year fun and exciting. Getting organized and learning good study skills is going to be the best way for this to happen.  6th grade is a HUGE transition into middle school.  The material is much harder and there is more of it.  Mrs. Christison is working with them on effective study skills as well as the best way to organize their lockers and their backpacks.  She is also stressing the use of their agenda to keep track of their
              assignments and what homework they have left to do at home as it will be an ongoing thing.  These are valuable tools if they are used correctly.

              6th grade will be taking semester test for the first time.  We encourage taking good notes and keeping ALL test and quizzes from each chapter. This is hard to do for an entire semester.  Please check with your child periodically to see if they need some help.

              Parents and teachers have a wonderful opportunity to share in the education of the
              children.  Please remember that this partnership is vital and important for the success of each student.  Communication is the key to understanding and you are welcome at the
              school at any time. All visitors must check in at the front office and wear a nametag for identification.  Teachers check their e-mail several times a day.  This is probably the
              best way to communicate with them, but feel free to call during their planning
              time if you wish.  Also, for your convenience you may monitor your child’s grades, assignments, and other information on Teacher Ease.  If you have not done so, please provide an e-mail address so that we may provide you with a Teacher Ease password.

              B=83-91
              C=74-82

              Absent Work
              If you know ahead of time that your child will be gone (vacation, appointment, sports), your child needs to get all assignments in advance and turn the work in the day he or she returns.  If you are sick, you  have as many days as you are sick, up to three days,
              to turn in the work.   (Ex: sick 1 day- 1 day for make-up work to be returned)

              When a student is absent, I will have the work ready to be picked up at the end of that school day.  If the absent work is not picked up by a parent or a sibling that day, it
              is the SIXTH GRADER’S RESPONSIBILITY TO COME TO ME and ask for the work.  If the work is not picked up  from me, a zero will be given the day I enter grades into Teacher
              Ease.

              Late Work
              If your child fails to turn in an assignment on time, I will email you the day I enter that
              assignment into Teacher Ease.  Your child will receive a zero at this time.  From the date of the email notice of late work, your child will have 5 school days to get the work to me
              for late credit.  After 5 days, the work will not  be accepted and the zero will remain in the grade book.

              6th Grade "Contact Teachers"
              6th graders will not have a "homeroom teacher."  Ms. Wray will be the contact teacher for all 6th grade boys.  Mrs. Reddick will be the contact teacher for all 6th grade girls.  This simply means when picture money is due, report card envelopes returned, etc. the boys will give it to Ms. Wray and the girls will give it to Mrs. Reddick.

              If you ever have an academic concern, please contact the teacher for that subject.  The four 6th grade teachers are a team and you can come to any of us anytime.  We want to help your child be successful in all aspects of 6th grade!

              Class PartiesParties:
              6th grade does not have class parties. They participate in the Middle School socials in the
              evenings.
              We try to take them bowling & to eat pizza on the last day of school before Christmas
              break. We would love for you to accompany us on this trip.  Please e-mail us if you would like to come as it gets closer.
              Box Tops
               We are collecting BOX TOPS!  Many of the school supplies have Box Tops attached.  We will catch those as we unpack supplies.  Please be collecting Box Tops at home.  Last year the 6th graders won the Box Top contest and Mrs. Reddick and Mrs. Christison were given $150 to spend on grade level supplies!

              Tabs For Charity
              Oakdale also collects "tabs" off of pop cans.  These are collected and given to the charity The Ronald McDonald House.  Mrs. Christison has a large container in her room for kids to drop in tabs.  Thanks for your help in teaching our Oakdale kids to help others.
